The Powerpuff Girls: Cartoon Network
built 657 days ago
The Powerpuff Girls Movie Powerpuff Girls creator, Craig McCracken, originally named his series "The Whoopa-- Girls." Saner heads seem to have prevailed and the cartoon was renamed before it made it big. That’s not relevant to this movie except to further point out that violence plays a very large role here. Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup spill their milk violently and they wipe it up violently. There’s no room for talking. No space for resolution.
There are few cartoons today that are able to amuse both adults and children, and the Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls is one of them. This is a show about three cute little girls, with huge heads and eyes and no fingers, who save the day yet need to be home by bedtime. It is weird but fun mix of violence, superheroics, and cuteness that has attracted a diverse fan base. The Powerpuff Girls movie is their origin, detailing just exactly how they got their super powers. The movie ... retains the feel of the movie by keeping the animation style and spirit. The spirit element is the most important.

Aficionados of the Powerpuff Girls, those buggy-eyed 5-year-old triplets whose antics on the Cartoon Network have generated a billion-dollar marketing juggernaut, may not be entirely overjoyed by "The Powerpuff Girls Movie." Although the film has the wham-bam kinetic fizz of a 60's Pop Art explosion, its hipness quotient is considerably below that of the smartest individual episodes. There are practical reasons for this dilution of wit. When it was decided to spin off a feature-length animated film from the series, the decision was ... made that the movie serve as a kind of prequel intended to introduce its squeaky-voiced little-girl superheroes to a wider audience unfamiliar with the series' in-jokes and mildly subversive humor. The gist of the movie is a raw fable about good and evil and self-empowerment, in which the girls have to earn their superhero status after two disastrous mistakes. — Stephen Holden, The New York Times
The looney-tooniest summer in recent memory proceeds apace with "The Powerpuff Girls," the third animated feature (after "Lilo & Stitch" and "Hey Arnold! The Movie!") to hit megaplexes within a fortnight. On the plus side, this bigscreen spinoff from the popular Cartoon Network series enters the crowded marketplace with widespread name recognition and a sizable fan base. Still: How many toons are too many? Early numbers for "Hey Arnold!" indicate that, even during summer months, aud appetite for family fare isn't exactly insatiable.

Jul 3, 2002 | "The Powerpuff Girls Movie," the big-screen version of the hugely popular Cartoon Network show created by Craig McCracken, shows little girls they can be and do anything they want. That, allegedly, is its redeeming social value. Forget all that: Any animated movie can have an embedded message, but not many cartoons these days are such sheer delight to look at.
