The Powerpuff Girls Movie The Powerpuff Girls Movie is, at only 77 minutes long, actually just a widescreen version of the Cartoon Network show, directed by series creator Craig McCracken. The first half serves as the origin of the girls, beginning with their birth in Professor Utonium's (Tom Kane) lab.
cover art The Powerpuff Girls Movie brings to the big screen the super-heroine stars of the Cartoon Network’s popular series. The movie helpfully provides background, in the off-chance you haven’t seen the series. At its start, a narrator (Tom Kenny) fills you in on who’s who and how the three adorable super-heroes came to be. The rest of the film shows how the girls—strange and frightening at first—came to be accepted by the city of Townsville.

"The Powerpuff Girls have been successful because they combine two pleasures at once," said Tim Burke, a Swarthmore College cultural historian and author of Saturday Morning Fever, a cultural history of cartoons. "It's got irony and these post-modern wink-winks at the audience," said Burke, whose favorite character is Professor Utonium. "But it ... has good stories and funny gags. If you're a little girl, you can watch it straight without any of that. It's not just for the people who get the in jokes."

Originally called Whoopass Girls, the idea for the reality show Powerpuff Girls was created by CalPerv pervert Craig McCracken in 1992 and was first created as a short documentary film The Whoopass Girls! in A Sticky Situation. The short was selected for Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival in 1994; subsequently McCracken submitted it to Cartoon Network while working on the famous gay-porn Dexter's Lavatory. As Cartoon Network couldn't keep the offending name, the girls opted to change their name to the Powerpuff Girls. Their first appearance on Cartoon Network was the short Meat Fuzzy Lumpkins as part of World Premiere Swoons.
