The Penguins have been outscored, 30-20, at even-strength in the first 13 games, the third-worst ratio in the league. They are averaging .67 five-on-five goals for every one they allow; only Edmonton (.64) and Florida (.66) are faring worse.

The Penguins toured back east, appeared at the Apollo Theater and at Alan Freed's Brooklyn Paramount rock 'n' roll shows, and performed for a national audience on "The Ed Sullivan Show. "During this period they enjoyed the status of hitmakers, sharing the stage with greats like Louis Jordan, Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington. But despite some good recordings on Mercury, they couldn't come up with a successful follow-up to "Earth Angel."

The Penguins are mostly nameless and undifferentiated from one another. Generally playful and wacky in nature, they have appeared in many Muppet productions (sometimes in places where penguins are not commonly seen). They are best known for tossing themselves into the air. In The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, the Muppet penguins are referred to by Scooter as "unisex" or genderless.

The Penguins' single "Hey Senorita" was released on Doo-Tone Records in late 1954 as the intended A-side, but a radio DJ flipped the record over to the B-side, "Earth Angel", which became far more popular. Their midtempo performance was a cross between rhythm and blues and the new rock and roll played by white performers and enjoyed by teenagers.

The Penguins' roots can be traced back to early 1950s Los Angeles. Of course, most large cities with substantial black populations were hotbeds of R&B group singing, and L.A. was no exception.
