Their habitat has ice and freezing cold water. They can survive in their habitat because they have a layer of white down feathers that keep their bodies warm. They ... have a layer of fat.

A lot was probably going on beneath the sleek, black coats of the adult penguins. But this observer saw only their indomitable will to suffer 80-mile-per-hour ice blasts so their children could stay warm.

On land, penguins are less agile. They almost always stand upright, using the stout tail feathers as a prop. They waddle rather than walk because of their short legs, but on ice they can move fast, even tobogganing on their bellies.
