The Penguins: Birds
built 658 days ago
Unsentimental types should be warned, though, that not every remnant of anthropomorphism was scrapped with the original soundtrack, in which actors voiced the penguins' presumed thoughts. Morgan Freeman's voiceover work is perfect, but the script unnecessarily contains descriptions of the birds' emotions in reaction to various circumstances.
African penguins inhabit twenty-seven sites. Most are on inshore islands, of which the best known is Robben Island. There are only three of them on the mainland sites. The largest existing colony is on St Croix island near Port Elizabeth, with about 50 000 birds. Dassen Island off Yzerfontein, once home to over a million penguins, now has about 30 000, while Dyer Island near Gansbaai has about 20 000. The most remarkable of the mainland colonies is Boulders Beach in Simon's Town with over 2500 birds.

oh, the horror The children's story is not about one penguin tricking with another at the birdbath-house. It's about 2 male birds raising an orphaned chick. Anyone who is outraged by this needs to get a life.

A giant petrel takes up residence near the penguins for a few weeks, to levy his share of isolated chicks every day. To add insult to injury, this bird of prey is only attacking live chicks, because the dozens of small corpses of chicks that are scattered on the ice are too deeply frozen for the predator to be able to eat them.
Why do penguins behave in this manner? Because it works for them, and their environment gives them little alternative. They are Darwinism embodied. But their life history is so strange that until the last century, it was not even guessed at. The first Antarctic explorers found penguins aplenty, but had little idea where they came from, where they went to, and indeed whether they were birds or mammals.

Interns Whether the ‘design’ of the emperor penguin is intelligent or not is debatable. Their behaviour is predictable, and when they have stood around for weeks on end in freezing blizzards without any food, they have too little energy to fend off preying birds who go after their chicks. And considering that all their standing around is because of their ‘devotion’ to their offspring, this seems very unfortunate indeed.
