The Neville Brothers' equipment is a blend of modern high-tech tools and classic vintage gear. Whether it's a “fly date” where they use rental equipment or a summer festival tour where the band can truck their own gear, production manager Kenny Nestor works more than 60 hours a week — year-round — to keep the Nevilles and their side projects running smoothly.

This recent concert headlines first and second-generation stars of soul from Patti LaBelle, The Neville Brothers and Ann Peebles to newcomers Deborah Cos, Jully Black, Sylvie Desgroseilliers and Haydain Neale, to name but a few. Immortal songs spanning five decades fill the bill, including Patti LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade" and "Way Up There," The Neville Brother's "Tell it Like it is," and Ann Peebles "I Can't Stop the Rain". But rising stars hold their own with impeccable covers of the classics like "Stand by Me," performed by Jully Black, to "Son of a Preacherman," performed by Dionne Taylor, and "Best of My Love," performed by Deborah Cox. Adding to the performances, Patti LaBelle delivers a moving tribute in memory of Luther Vandross and spoken-word segments remind the audience of the social background to the music.

The Neville Brothers endorse Shure mics — Aaron sings through a Shure SM87, a supercardioid condenser wireless microphone, and brothers Art and Cyril use wired SM87s. Backup singer Earl Smith and bassist David Johnson ... use SM87s, but Charles Neville prefers a standard Shure SM58 for his vocals. His saxophones are fitted with a Shure SM98 running into a Shure wireless belt-pack transmitter.

[T]he Neville Brothers will miss their second consecutive Jazzfest, but "that doesn't mean we're not working," Art said. The band is gearing up for a busy 30th anniversary summer. They'll tour with Ziggy Marley and Blues Traveler. They're planning another studio album. Their manager is combing the vaults for archival footage and recordings for a comprehensive box set, one the musicians may release and market themselves.

A cornerstone of the Crescent City music community for a dozen years, the Neville Brothers have long since been the consensus choice as potential superstars. They certainly have the talent, but so far that status has eluded the four brothers; their previous records six in all, counting live and historical anthologies haven't caught on beyond their cult following.
