The Neville Brothers: New Orleans
built 395 days ago
AALBC.com - The African American Literature Book Club The Neville Brothers new autobiography, The Brothers, co written with celebrity biographer David Ritz, is truly four biographies in one, for the personalities and voices of Art, Charles, Aaron and Cyril Neville come through distinctly. Their individual perspectives interweave and reinforce each other almost like a harmonious musical fugue.

The Neville Brothers represent the essence of 40 years of New Orleans music distilled within one family unit. The four brothers-Art, Charles, Aaron and Cyril- have individually and collectively carried the torch of the Crescent City's rich R&B legacy since the '50s
Shortly before leaving the Neville Brothers in early 1990, Brian left his roots behind and travelled to New York City to help put together a new band Big Deep to record for RCA Records. Along with Brian, the band consisted of members from Pink Floyd, The The, and the Neville Brothers quickly gaining a reputation as somewhat of a supergroup. A shake up at the record company left some key players out of a job and Big Deep dropped from the label shortly before the record's official release. During this same period, Brian managed to find time to go on the road with Dr. John. Soon realizing that Big Deep was not as deep as it should have been, he returned to his roots and travelled and recorded with Dr. John for the next year, exploring the funky side of life.

The Meters: The Meters Keyboardist Art Neville is a veteran of the Crescent City's musical scene. He scored his first hit with The Hawkettes, "Mardi Gras Mambo," in 1955. But he hadn't been playing much before forming Art Neville & the Neville Sounds in 1968. He recruited three younger players to play alongside himself and his brothers, but a club owner convinced Neville to downsize the ensemble. Then producers Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn hired them to be a studio band. Someone got the idea to put out some of their grooves as singles, they picked a new name, and in 1969 The Meters lodged five 45s in the r& b charts.
Neville remained with Extra until 1996 when the program was revamped. In 1997 she teamed up with famed sportscaster Fred Roggin to host Arthel & Fred, a daytime entertainment news program on NBC. A year later, Neville left Los Angeles for New York and joined Fox Broadcasting as a senior correspondent for the newsmagazine show Fox Files. She ... became the Fox News Channel's entertainment anchor. During this time Neville made cameo appearances on television sitcoms such as Moesha, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Cybill.
Today, Hidden Track passed along a link on the Time-Picayune site regarding the Funky Meters return to New Orleans (Art Neville, the eldest brother, is a member of both the Meters and the Neville Brothers). The article ... mentions the continued absence of the Neville Brothers in New Orleans. The criticism catches fire in the comments section. Some of the residents of New Orleans apparently harbor some serious resentment toward the Nevilles, accusing Art of bashing post-Katrina New Orleans, and going as far as calling them traitors and exploiters of their home town.
