The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment notes that wetlands provide services to humanity valued as high as $15 trillion annually, including the water supply on which an estimated 1.5 -3 billion people depend. Yet current human practices are degrading and destroying these wetlands at a faster rate than any other type of ecosystem.

The Millennium Commission has invested over £162 million in buildings, environmental projects and people across Yorkshire and Humberside. Projects include Sheffield ? Remaking the Heart of the City, which is revitalising the heart of the city centre with new peace gardens, winter gardens, and the Millennium Galleries, and Magna, a new science adventure centre in Rotherham which has welcomed 150,000 visitors since it opened in April.
The bridge opened to the public on 10 June 2000 when an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 people crossed it. As with all bridge structures, the Millennium Bridge is subject to a degree of movement. However, when large groups of people were crossing, greater than expected sideways movements occurred. The maximum sway of the deck was approximately 70mm. In order to fully investigate and resolve this phenomenon the decision was taken to close the bridge on 12 June. The movement and its effect on the crowds can be seen from the video footage.

It is expected that some 12-million people will visit the De Beers Millennium Jewels Exhibition at the new Millennium Dome in London. There they will remain on view in a specially designed exhibit for the entire year. It is worth it to pause a moment and reflect on the rarity of blue diamonds. Pre-20th century accounts of great blue diamonds reinforce the trade's historical links with India, the only known early source of diamonds. These accounts tell of diamonds such as Tavernier Blue (now known as the Hope Diamond; 45.52 carats) and the 30.82-carat Blue Heart, which today are valued for their history and mystique as much as for their rare color. These diamonds are famous because of their incredible rarity - only red diamonds are rarer - and the De Beers collection of blues is something that will never be seen again.
Over a 5-year period, community committees and local governments build capacity to continue these initiatives and develop a solid foundation for sustainable growth. To date, the Millennium Villages project has reached nearly 400,000 people in 79 villages. Clustered into12 groups across 10 African countries (Ethiopia,Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda,Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda), the villages are located in different agro-ecological zones that reflect the range of farming, water, and disease challenges facing the continent. Success in these different zones shows how tailored strategies can overcome each challenge.
