The Mask: Jim Carrey
built 390 days ago
Chuck Russell’s "The Mask" is pure family entertainment that, in a way, revives the old and glamorous Hollywood tradition of musicals. It is absolutely hilarious, and even if you have never been a fan of Jim Carrey, you will be stunned by this piece of modern filmmaking.

A film version of The Mask was released in the United States on July 29, 1994, starring Jim Carrey in the title role. Directed by Chuck Russell, the film co-starred Peter Greene as Dorian Tyrell, Peter Riegert as Lt. Mitch Kellaway, Orestes Matacena as Niko, Richard Jeni as Charlie Schumacher, Amy Yasbeck as Peggy Brandt, and Cameron Diaz, in her screen debut, as Tina Carlyle. Ben Stein has a cameo role as Dr. Arthur Neuman.
In 1994, when "The Mask" saw its original theatrical release, it was an instant success, catapulting its star Jim Carrey to Hollywood’s major league overnight. The movie impressed the public and critics alike, partially because of its mind-boggling computer generated special effects -- in fact, those effects still hold up extremely well these days, in a world where every cheesy commercial and TV series are plastered with computer generated images.

Sometimes it's hard to tell if The Mask (or Jim Carrey's in-your-face mugging in general) is actually funny, or just bizarre and grotesque. And sometimes it just doesn't matter. Carrey plays a shy, Jerry Lewis-like nerd who discovers an ancient mask that magically transforms him into a green-faced, zoot-suited Tex Avery cartoon character with no inhibitions. As Roger Ebert said of Carrey in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the actor performs "as if he's being clocked on an Energy-O-Meter, and paid by the calorie expended." If that's your kind of humor, you'll love The Mask; if not, you may need a valium or two to sit through this one. Digital video disc extras include two deleted scenes and a commentary track from director Charles Russell.

Somebody should have stopped screenwriters Lance Khazei and director Lawrence Guterman from making this dreadful sequel to The Mask. Instead of playfully wreaking havoc, this film just plain reeks. While Jim Carrey was obnoxiously annoying when he was transformed into the ladies man at least you could recognize Carrey's mannerisms, Jamie Kennedy seems to be having a real out-of-body experience as his green-colored self doesn't sound or look remotely like him.
