built 646 days ago
MajesticCinema Continuing its 80-year downtown tradition of movies, the new Majestic Performing Arts Center features two new cinemas that for the first time will bring fine art films to Adams County. The larger cinema seats 192 patrons, and is designed for flexible presentations including film, lectures, recitals, and black-box theater. The second cinema seats 93 patrons and is dedicated to films every night. Both new cinemas are designed in the 1950s style of "high swank" in honor of the theater's Eisenhower era, and feature:
Once called the Masonic Opera House, Chillicothe's Majestic Theater was built in 1853 on the site of the first bank in Chillicothe, which burned down. In its heyday major acts visited it: Milton Berle, Sophie Tucker, Laurel and Hardy. It has been used for opera, vaudeville, stage shows, and movies over the years.

In the 1950's, the Majestic Theater stepped onto the world stage when President Dwight D. Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie Eisenhower regularly attended performances, often in the company of world leaders. The theater's ballroom/gymnasium, always a popular spot for young people, was often used by the White House press corps for news conferences whenever President Eisenhower was in residence at his Gettysburg farm.
Sovereign Majestic Theater The refurbished Sovereign Majestic Theater is suitable for many kinds of performances including plays, children’s theater, concerts, and movies. The programming developed by SMTA will provide the local community affordable musical and artistic entertainment. The Sovereign Majestic Theater Association, a nonprofit, volunteer organization, is committed to preserving and operating a quality performing arts facility in both a fiscally and socially responsible manner to further develop the civic, cultural, and artistic needs of the Schuylkill County regional community.
Kyle Mitchell, most recently of Flagstaff, Ariz., has entered a lease agreement to renovate and operate the Majestic, which has not shown first-run movies since Oct. 1, 1995. The movie theater briefly reopened in 1998 to show classic films, but that lasted only six weeks. It ... hosted music concerts for a few months in 2002.
Governor Rendell will present the awards at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, at The Majestic Theater in Gettysburg. The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will include presentations and special performances. A ticketed reception will immediately follow the ceremony.
