The Lost Boys is a rare vampire movie in that the vampire lifestyle is a thing of social status in the community. In most vampire movies its either a thing of solitude, or or despair. In this movie vampires ride motorcylces, party all day, and take whatever they want. The vampires are the ultimate Peter Pans who are eager to reel new members into their ranks rather than just remaining a lone elite club. The movie is as much a movie of adventure like goonies as a film of horror. Regardless of how ithe movie is classified, its an enjoyable tale of vampire cliches, lifestyle, and the heights of kid imagination.

The Lost Boys was produced at the height of Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" anti-drug ad campaign, and the film's depiction of vampirism is a direct metaphor for teenage drug addiction as it was portrayed in the media in the 1980s. The film's title is derived from Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie.

The Lost Boys of Sudan, so named by aid workers after the fictional characters in Peter Pan, became separated from their families at early ages following attacks on their villages. They walked in large groups for approximately three months before reaching the safety of Ethiopia, with many dying along the way due to starvation and disease or attacks by wild animals. After residing in Ethiopia for approximately four years, civil war broke out in that country as well, causing them to flee once again to their war-torn country of Sudan.

Monica Alek made the same epic journey the Lost Boys did. As a child of 6, she walked with her cousin and uncle from her home in southern Sudan to Ethiopia and then back through Sudan to Kenya, covering a distance of about 1,000 miles.

The cost of shoes and race entries is one reason the Lost Boys have not entered races since relocating to Colorado. For the Bolder Boulder, Wood is trying to round up race entries, running shoes and training gear for the Lost Boys, who are from the Dinka tribe. They do not know exactly when they were born, so most were given birth dates of Jan 1, 1979 by the U.S. immigration service. Not many girls survived the harsh conditions, but two females from Sudan did make it to the metro area. Both are attending school with one, Miklina, attending CU.
