There's no reason in hell to remake "The Longest Yard." Not one. In fact, the idea behind the film, that a corrupt warden who wants to run for governor would allow a football game between inmates and guards to take place for publicity, is even more dubious now than it was 30 years ago. At least in the 70's, such shenanigans seems likely. In the modern day, even in prison-happy Texas, such an idea seems contrived at best, ridiculous at the worst.

If you can bear the heat, from August 2-5, along the Route 127 Corridor you will encounter the World's Longest Yard Sale (tel. 800/327-3945; www.127sale.com), which runs for 630 miles and five states starting now from the Ohio/Michigan border all the way to Gadsden, Alabama. This year marks its 20th anniversary. A good place for more information is the Fentress County Chamber of Commerce in Jamestown, which has served as the headquarters since 1995 and is centrally located. If you are even remotely interested in this event, it is wise to book your accommodations as soon as possible because hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts along the way are sold out several weeks in advance of the event's start. **Note - The World's Longest Yard Sale is a 4-day event. The dates will be determined each year by the First Saturday of the month of August. The event will officially take place the Thursday prior to the first Saturday to the following Sunday for 4 days of yard sale heaven!
