The Last Dance is the McLane family's story about learning to "swim in the deep end of the lake" when the woman they all love best, their matriarch, Susan 'Susie' McLane, slips away, one day at a time, to Alzheimer's disease. Currently in New Hampshire, twenty thousand people have Alzheimer's, touching the lives of families all across the state. Susan has led a public life, serving those families for twenty-five years in the New Hampshire Legislature.

Vaanaprastham, (The Last Dance , 1999), directed by Shaji N. Karun, is an Indian film that is far removed from the Bollywood tradition of songs and melodrama. It is a slow-paced, thoughtful and, at times, somber depiction of a dancer estranged from the father who never knew him and the son he is not allowed to see. The film is full of passion but is restrained in its delicate portrayal of the consequences of the Indian caste system and the failure to distinguish between reality and fantasy.

The last half of 1864 was a disaster for the army. In May, Union General William T. Sherman began his drive on Atlanta from Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Confederate army was commanded then by Joseph Johnston, who responded to Sherman's flanking maneuvers by retreating slightly each time. From May to July, Johnston slowly backed into Atlanta, exchanging territory for time. When the troops reached Atlanta, Confederate President Jefferson Davis replaced Johnston with the offensive minded Hood. Hood immediately attacked Sherman three times in late July, losing each time.

Unfortunately, despite another strong performance, she can't do the same thing for Save the Last Dance. This time around, she plays a suburban white teenager named Sara who, after the sudden death of her mother, goes to live with her father on the south side of Chicago (thumbs up to the filmmakers for actually making it feel like the south side of Chicago). There she meets Chenille (Kerry Washington), an African-American high schooler with way more fashion sense than Sara, and Chenille's brother Derek (played by Sean Patrick Thomas), a strong-willed senior with his eyes set on Georgetown. It's not long before Sara and Derek "hook up."

"Before the Last Dance" is fiction, but its subject is so true to life. Growing older in the gay community is a big concern for many. The culture is drowning itself in beauty and youth. If one is fortunate to be born with good looks, it is only a matter of time before it is taken from them. Such a cruel reality makes one wonder if it is better to be born average rather than be faced with watching the years take away that God-given gift of beauty. For those blessed, as time passes and their looks wilt, they, as with other older gay men, fade into the background only to be soon forgotten by the very culture they once played a vital role in nurturing.

"Save the Last Dance" has a fair amount of choreography. Stiles and Thomas seem to perform most of their own dances, and they're both pretty good at it (although body double dance pros take over the complicated moves). Unlike various breakdancing extravaganzas of the mid-1980s, this movie doesn't come to a stand still when the music stops playing. Even by taking the dancing out of the film, there'd still be left a well-acted, thought-provoking story. Few musicals can accomplish that.
