The Kennedys: Shooting
built 295 days ago
The Kennedys, a D.C.-area husband-and-wife folk-pop team, have been tearing up the scene since their 1995 debut, the Celtic-tinged River of Fallen Stars (Green Linnet). The jangly guitars, tight harmonies, positive energy, and smart lyrics found on this album and its all-star follow-up, 1996's Life Is Large, garnered the couple many awards, including more than 30 Wammies (Washington Area Music Awards) and a National Association of Independent Record Distributors indie award for best contemporary adult album for River.

The Kennedys put enormous pressure on the organizers of the historic March on Washington in August 1963 to avoid any criticisms of the administration. Yet at the march, Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee leader -- and future member of Congress -- John Lewis could pose a question that resonated with many: “Which side is the federal government on?”

There are several versions of how the Kennedys got started, but when one goes in and examines things, what turns out is that the origins of the Kennedys is Ireland are very clear. They are descendants of Brian Born (... known as Brian Caeneddi) and his nephew who spelled it Cinneide. The name thereafter was O’Kennedy. They originally were a Dalcassion sept, and were in the area near Killahoe, and Killokennedy parish is a reminder of that ancient fact. The O’Briens and MacNamaras forced them into new territories where they became the Lords of Ormond--what is now north Tipperary. Most Kennedys in Ireland today are still found in that area.

For a self-taught cinematographer who's no older than Patrick Kennedy himself, Taking On the Kennedys is a remarkable piece of work. Already touted as a wunderkind for his first film, Lost and Found, a documentary on the plight of Romania's orphans that was nominated for a national Emmy, Seftel is incredibly resourceful, a man who hasn't let discouragement stand in his way. After graduating from Tufts in 1990 and making little headway in the job market (qualified to teach high-school French, he was ... seeking entry-level film-production assignments), he made the decision to shoot Lost and Found on his own. He raised $2000, borrowed a camera, and hopped on a plane. The rest is film history.

The highly-acclaimed documentary "Taking on the Kennedys" by filmaker Josh Seftel is coming out on a DVD loaded with extras on January 25. According to a press release issued by the filmaker, the DVD will be available on Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, and other leading retailers. Not only does the DVD tell the story of Dr. Kevin Vigilante's underdog race against Kennedy in 1994, it ... contains commentary by Seftel, campaign commercials that aired during 1994, a "making-of" short film, and a never-before-seen short movie by Seftel entitled "The Real Russell," which presents an irreverent look at Bob Dole's hometown with author Michael Lewis. The DVD is produced through Docurama, a label of the New Video Group Inc. Docurama is committed to releasing critically acclaimed and cutting-edge documentary films to the home entertainment market.

As with most reunion shows, especially those that see original members replaces, the buzz surrounding the show was that an atrocity was being done by having the Dead Kennedys reform and tour. This feeling of betrayal disappeared from all in attendance as the band began its set, with the maniacal "Forward To Death."
