    The Great Kat is an unfortunate hostage of her unabashed self-promotion and hype. "The world’s fastest guitarist," "genius personality," "the High Priestess of Guitar Shred," and "systematically changing the face of classical music," shout her press releases. The reality of the Great Kat’s music is far less outrageous. In the early 1980s, The New York Times reviewed her debut recital while she was still Kathy Thomas -- a violin student at the Juilliard School. The reviewer, after praising her strong technique and ideas, mentioned her "overstated" performance of the Carmen Fantasy. On this new CD, she overstates this same piece, only now in a different milieu.

    The Great Kat's use of stage blood is way beyond what's been used in metal before, running laps around Gene Simmons and possibly tying with Glenn Danzig's Samhain. Nope, her use of blood -- rubbing and pouring it all over herself, looking like a demented cannibal -- has to be up there with greats like Ric Flair and Abdullah the Butcher. The DVD packaging is awesome -- just full-color action shots of Kat giving it her all on the guitar, y'know, making Dio look like a wallflower in terms of presentation and theatrics. Hey what? Where? Awesome!

    "The Wedding Date," an unoriginal title that accurately matches the film's own level of innovation, is a piffle of a romantic comedy that embraces genre conventions while sidestepping some potentially interesting issues. Protagonist Kat, for example, is a gorgeous, likable young woman who, for reasons left unexplored, has trouble getting dates. That she finally falls in love with Nick is all well and good, but he comes from the "Pretty Woman" closet of prostitutes, where diseases are nonexistent, his own sexuality is smolderingly harmless, and the particulars of his profession are an afterthought in Kat's mind.

    At the moment, the Great Kat is feeling both triumphant and chagrined. Dubbed "the fastest female guitar shredder in the world" in Spin magazine, she has just been chosen to endorse Burns USA Guitars' uber-cool "Shredder" model. In April, she came in at No. 10 on Guitar One's "Top 10 Shredders of All Time."
