The Hummingbirds: People
built 260 days ago
Hummingbirds have numerous fascinating biological aspects that should be emphasized in an exhibit and used for interpretive purposes. For example heartbeat, respiration, body temperature, metabolism, torpor, wing beats, weight, iridescence, etc. should be explained with signage inside the exhibit. Comparing a hummingbird's metabolism with that of a human always thrills the public. Many people think that hummingbirds cannot possibly migrate on their own and must ride on the backs of geese! The courtship displays are incredible and should be interpreted.
As a rule, if you set the table for hummingbirds, they will come. Ruby-throated hummingbirds - the only ones regularly found in Pennsylvania or east of the mighty Mississippi River in spring and summer - aren't necessarily very timid and seem begrudgingly tolerant of people. As long as they can find your feeder, they'll figure out when it's best to use it.

A: This depends on how many hummingbirds will be using your feeder. The rule of thumb is to put out no more solution than the birds can drink in two or three days. If your feeder is too large, the solution spoils before the birds can finish it. If your feeder is too small, you spend more time filling feeders than enjoying the birds. Most people can get by with feeders that hold 6 to 12 ounces of solution, adding one or two more small feeders during migration.

On the Nazca plain in southern Peru, ancient artists carved out an image of a hummingbird so large that it can only be recognized at about 1,000 feet in the air. These people recognized the sacredness of nature. They understood the magnitude of these tiny gifts, which are unique to the New World.
HARRISBURG - Some people are convinced there's a secret to getting hummingbirds to visit their yards. They believe they need special feeders. Perfectly mixed nectars. Precision feeder placement. But, hummingbirds really aren't that finicky.
