Students will be reading an average of two chapters a week in "The House of the Spirits." The novel revolves around the Trueba and del Valle families and spans almost a century. It chronicles several generations of family and national history and takes place in South America. The novel serves as an exciting teacher, offering the richness of South American culture.
Esteban Garcia goes in to the main house at Três Marias when no one is looking. He finds Blanca playing hopscotch in the living room. Blanca inquires who he is, but he doesn't answer. He looks at Blanca and calls her to his lap. He asks about her dress and tells her she smells good. Blanca says her mother made the dress, and that her mother and aunt bathe her in a bubble bath every day.

The House of the Spirits - Isabel Allende The House of the Spirits stretches from the turn of the century to the political upheaval that Chile experienced during the 1970s. This is an historical fiction and it includes several references to The Poet, who is the famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. You can read some of his poems here.
Untouched that is, until January 10, when the house was unceremoniously torn down to make way for a new development of terraced houses. As news of the cultural disaster emerged, almost two months later, fears have grown over the fate of other historic villas in the area - among them the erstwhile homes of author Alberto Moravia and screenwriter Ennio Flaiano.
In late 1998, the governor ordered that no demolition permits be issued for the house. But the survey Awad recommended was never undertaken, and the priceless artifacts have been removed to an unknown location. The grounds have since been usurped by high-rise concrete apartment buildings, blocking the view Durrell loved.
