Through participation in two simulations, students determine that bank panics and a shrinking money supply were the primary causes of the Great Depression. Through an additional activity, they see how the many other factors they have discussed, such as problems in the agricultural sector and the stock market crash, exacerbated the situation.

Students were discussing the Great Depression in Social Studies class. They chose pictures from the internet and became that person. They were ... discussing the fifty states, so they were able to chose a person from the state they were researching on. They were able to locate the state on the map and place a string from the journal to the state. source

Drought refugee family from McAlester, Oklahoma. Arrived in California October 1936 to join the cotton harvest. Near Tulare, California. Students may develop theses explaining what their political views would have been if they had lived during the Great Depression. Would they have been Republicans, Democrats, socialists, or communists? Why would they have chosen a particular party or ideology?
