The Goodbye Girl

"The Goodbye Girl" is one of those sardonic-slash-romantic sitcom/musicals that now have virtually disappeared from the Broadway landscape, eclipsed by projects of greater scale. Originally starring Martin Short and Bernadette Peters, the setup here involves Paula, a struggling, 35-year-old dancer (played by Moniz), who gets dumped by her louse of an actor boyfriend just as the Act 1 curtain is rising.

Because they are previews, tickets are a little bit cheaper, but make sure to watch out for the Wallet Watcher performance (January 13) and Hooky Matinee (January 16) that only cost $10.

Whereas "Fold" showed a range of styles, "The Goodbye Girl" has a consistent music style. The songs are similar, without sounding exactly the same. The result here is an LP that actually sounds like an album with a life and feeling all of its own, as opposed to "Fold", which was ultimately just a collection of songs (although it must be said a very impressive collection of songs).
