The conflict in The Girl Next Door is between Kelly and Matthew, for Danielle. To Kelly, Danielle is a piece of meat that he sells off to sleazy producers to make money. Matthew believes that Danielle is better than this, and that she doesn't need to be in porn. It's very noble, and what draws Danielle to Matthew. This tug-of-war escalates until Matthew and company head to Las Vegas to an Adult Video Expo to try to win Danielle back. It sounds a lot more prurient than it actually is, although the film is a walking billboard for Vivid Video and Wicked Pictures, two actual companies.

The Girl Next Door is an intimate and humanizing look into the rise to fame of adult film superstar Stacy Valentine. The wheels were set in motion when Stacy's then-husband, to satisfy his own sexual fantasy, urged his Oklahoma housewife, Stacy Baker, to submit her photograph to Gallery Magazine's amateur pictorial competition, voyeuristically named, "The Girl Next Door." Easily winning this contest, Stacy was soon gracing the cover of Hustler magazine and accepting offers to perform in X-rated films. Within months, Stacy Baker had the money and confidence she needed to escape her abusive marriage and head for Hollywood. In mid-February 1995, she arrived in Los Angeles as Stacy Valentine.

In the tradition of Risky Business and American Pie comes The Girl Next Door, a sex-soaked teen comedy that actually has a heart. High school graduation is nearing for senior class president Matt Kidman (Emile Hirsch), who has been more concerned with getting into college than partying. But all that changes one night when the gorgeous Danielle (Elisha Cuthbert) arrives next door. Engaging, funny, and wild, Danielle is Matt's dream girl come to life, and it appears that she likes him back. But there is a shocking secret Danielle's a porn star! When her wacky producer, Kelly, shows up to take her back to "work", Matt's life really begins to spiral out of control.

For the uninitiated, The Girl Next Door tells the story of Meg and her crippled sister Susan, who have been sent to live with their Aunt Ruth following the death of their parents in a car accident. Ruth is "like one of the gang" according to David, the next door neighbor and friends to Ruth’s three sons, Willie, Donny, and "Woofer". The rest of the neighborhood kids love Ruth because she allows them a glimpse of adulthood by letting them congregate at her house to watch TV, where they can drink a beer, or sneak a cigarette. In return Ruth holds court on her favorite topics: the weakness of women and the tyranny of men.

The Girl Next Door has been directed by Luke Greenfield, whose previous film was the Rob Schneider vehicle The Animal. To call this an improvement is an understatement (not that it would take all that much to top The Animal, of course). Greenfield imbues the movie with a light, poppy feel that suits the material nicely - though he doesn't fare quite as well in the more sinister sequences. As a result, there's a distinct feeling of unevenness running through the film (the darker second half doesn't really jive with the cute and inoffensive opening hour).

The Girl Next Door misses in certain scenes. Fugate is so intent on revealing Valentine's humanity that she sometimes lets the camera linger too long. The long shot of Valentine after she doesn't win Performer of the Year at the Adult Video Awards in Las Vegas feels staged. Fugate follows Valentine out of the theater, into her limo, into the hotel, and ends the shot with Valentine alone in the bed. Fugate should have trusted her audience to understand and analyze Valentine's disappointment.
