The Federation: National Federation
built 658 days ago
The Washington Seminar is an annual event of the National Federation of the Blind to introduce the agenda of blind Americans--the priority issues requiring congressional attention over the coming year. The issues are selected from official positions of the Federation and may address concerns in the following areas: Social Security and Supplemental Security Income programs; relevant civil rights issues; educational programs and services; rehabilitation of the blind for competitive employment; the operation of vending facilities by blind persons on public property; specialized library services for the blind; the organization and funding of federal programs; and other timely topics. Approximately three legislative initiatives are chosen for priority attention during the Washington Seminar.

As Monitor readers know, the National Federation of the Blind of South Carolina has been engaged for a number of years in a struggle to improve the quality of service provided by the South Carolina Commission for the Blind. (See the February, 1989, Braille Monitor story about audit shenanigans and telephone abuses in the Commission.) William James, Director of the Commission, has never been a friend to the blind. He has refused to be accountable to the people he serves, and beyond that, he has done everything he could to make life difficult for the organized blind movement.

From December of 2003 until the spring of 2007, Dr. Zaborowski served as the first executive director of the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute, the Federation's research and training facility. During her tenure as Jernigan Institute director, Dr. Zaborowski established and oversaw innovative programs designed to provide opportunity for blind Americans of all ages. Her initiatives included the National Center for Blind Youth in Science (NCBYS), a program encouraging blind youth to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) -- fields falsely believed to be closed to the blind. Dr. Zaborowski ... oversaw the Jernigan Institute's International Braille and Technology Center, the largest center for the evaluation of technology for the blind anywhere in the world, and the Accessible Home Initiative, which helps blind people to identify appliances and consumer electronics that they can use independently.

Welcome to the Chicano Federation In 1996, the Federation spearheaded a national Latino Unity Summit attended by more than 40 national, state and local organizations to promote citizenship and voter registration drives. Other activities in the late 1990's included sponsorship of the Latino Education Summit to chart a strategy to empower parents and to promote accountability in public education; and co-sponsorship of a Latino Health Conference to develop policy recommendations for improving health care services for Latinos.
