   The denial of an air-quality permit to Tri-State and Sunflower Electric by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment last week was the first time that carbon-dioxide emissions have been cited as a reason for denial in the United States. Health department secretary Rod Bremby denied the permit on the basis of carbon dioxide because it is a greenhouse gas associated with climate change.

   By default, a child process inherits the environment variables of its parent process. However, you can specify a different environment for the child process by creating a new environment block and passing a pointer to it as a parameter to the CreateProcess function.
3. Lindane -- Environment
   Lindane is a persistent organic pollutant according to the UN Environment Programme. It has been found in increasing concentrations in the marine environment and particularly the North Sea. It is highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates and fish.

5. Environment Canada
   According to Environment Canada, higher import figures in the past were due to differences in standards for pre-treatment of waste between Canada and the US. The government of Canada recently called for a strengthening of those standards for waste management in Canada, especially in Canadian landfills. So heeding their government, a working group under the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment developed a plan for the environmentally sound management of hazardous waste.
6. Corrosion -- Environments
   "Corrosion has been a problem on the North Slope. That investigation of the cause is a key element in addition to the clean up itself trying to get it cleaned up as quickly as possible and minimize the impact on the tundra," Program Manager with the Department of Environmental Conservation Leslie Pearson said.
7. Bacteria -- Environments
   Bacteria have an extremely wide distribution. They are found from pole to pole. They have been isolated from the icy wastes of the Arctic and the Antarctic, and are found in the waters of hot springs, and near volcanoes on the ocean bed. The diversity of habitats in which bacteria may be found is staggering. 8. Environment -- Organizations
   In June 2000, the Luce Foundation announced a $30 million initiative in the environment, and invited American colleges, universities and non-governmental organizations to apply for grants. Since the initiative’s launch, the foundation has approved 77 grants, ranging from $1,000 to $1.6 million. These grants have reached 35 institutions of higher education, as well as 32 other organizations. With grants approved in March 2007, the foundation reached its goal of $30 million. The foundation’s board of directors recently celebrated the successful completion of the initiative. As a result, it is inviting no new proposals for the environmental initiative.

10. Archaea -- Environments
    Archaea are usually placed into three groups based on preferred habitat. These are the halophiles, methanogens, and thermophiles. Halophiles, sometimes known as Halobacterium live in extremely saline environments. Methanogens live in anaerobic environments and produce methane. These can be found in sediments or in the intestines of animals. Thermophiles live in places that have high temperatures, such as hot springs.
