The Dead

The Dead Sea is the saltiest lake in the world. It is called "dead" because the high salinity prevents any fish or other visible aquatic organism to live in its water. The high density of the water ... causes a curious phenomenon: it is impossible for a bather to sink. Its surface is the lowest point on Earth, at an elevation of 417 below sea level. A great place to observe the extend of the Dead Sea is the natural fortress of Masada, reached from the Dead Sea side by a steep trail of 450m elevation. After being the palace of Herod the Great, it was for 967 Jewish Zealots the last stronghold in their revolt against Rome, as it took 15,000 Roman men to build a ramp from the Western side of the plateau to eventually breach their defenses.
The Dead Zone will be coming to Blu-Ray in 2007 according to Lionsgate. In an annoncement they are expecting to have at least 40 new titles on Blu-Ray format by the end of the year. Lionsgate will release movies ... such as 'American Psycho', 'Rambo: First Blood', 'Reservoir Dogs' & 'Young Guns' in Febuary.
The Dead Sea region has special historical significance for Israel. The Bible describes, in Genesis 19, the destructive earthquake near the Dead Sea area at the time of Abraham. While no evidence remains of the ancient cities of Zeboim, Admah, Bela, Sodom or Gomorrah, their sites are believed to be located near the southern end of the sea. In 1947, a young Beduin shepherd discovered an ancient scroll in a cave at Qumran, near the northern basin. The scroll was preserved by the low humidity in the cave. Additional discoveries in the area produced thousands of scroll fragments which have been pieced together and preserved at the Shrine of the Book Museum in Jerusalem.

The Dead Sea got its name because it was believed that life forms could not survive in the salty water. In 1936, Benjamin Elazari-Volcani of the Sieff Institute in Israel found evidence of microorganisms in the lake. He found one species of alga, the green Dunaliella, and several species of bacteria. The Dundaliella is usually found in fresh water or seawater but can adapt to a hyper saline environment by synthesizing glycerol, which increases the osmotic pressure inside the cell and prevents the entry of salt. Algae can only survive at the surface. Halotolerant red bacteria, which can survive in water with a moderate salt concentration (at least 150 grams of sodium chloride), are found at the northern end where fresh Jordan River mixes with Dead Sea water.
A tourist demonstrates the unusual buoyancy caused by high salinity. The Dead Sea is located in the Dead Sea Rift, which is part of a long fissure in the Earth's surface called the Great Rift Valley. The 6,000 km (3,700 mile) long Great Rift Valley extends from the Taurus Mountains of Turkey to the Zambezi Valley in southern Africa. The Great Rift Valley formed in Miocene times as a result of the Arabian Plate moving northward and then eastward away from the African Plate.
