The Cheerleaders: Squad
built 199 days ago
Often called "America's Sweethearts," the Cheerleaders recently visited troops recuperating from injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center. In March, service members in Germany, Belgium, England and Iceland were treated to shows by the Cheerleaders. Last December, the group spent their 25th Christmas with troops in Korea. They ... participated on the USO's first tour to Iraq in 2003. The squad has entertained troops stationed all over the world, including Kosovo, Germany, United Arab Emirates, Bosnia, Italy and Hungary. In 1991, the Cheerleaders were presented with the USO's 50th anniversary award, and, in 1997, the USO recognized their dedication with its most prestigious honor, the "Spirit of Hope" Award.
Cheerleader History The Miami Dolphins inaugural season was in 1966, which ... marked the beginning of cheerleaders on the sidelines at the Dolphins home games at the Orange Bowl. The first Dolphins cheerleading squad, known as the Dolphin Dolls, consisted of 125 girls ranging in age from 8 to 18. Of the 125 members, 48 were chosen each week to perform on the sidelines while the remaining cheered from their seats in the endzone bleachers. The Dolphin Dolls, under the direction of Bill Allen, cheered at the Dolphins games until 1977.
The problems culminated this fall under the most recent cheerleading coach, Michaela Ward. Though her relationship with the girls started off amicably, things quickly soured. Among the pranks they allegedly pulled on Ward: giving her what the report described as a "chocolate tampon" and sending racy text messages from her cell phone to her husband and another coach. When the condom-store photos hit the Internet, they triggered a firestorm. Now taking a hard line, Theret, according to her attorney, recommended kicking the five girls off the squad. But a committee of administrators from the school and the district recommended 15-day suspensions for the girls in the drinking photo and 30-day suspensions for those in the condom-store snapshot.

After retiring from the squad in 1989, Finglass was hired by Jerry Jones as an assistant director to the cheerleaders from 1989 to 1990. She then took a position in the sales and promotions department for the Dallas Cowboys and in 1991 was promoted to director of the cheerleaders. She quickly stepped into the role of business manager and entrepreneur, deftly branding America's sweethearts and turning the department into a successful profit center for the first time in their 20 year history. Her astute attention to detail, creative insight and savvy marketing skills quickly produced remarkable results. Launching corporate sponsorships and developing innovative merchandising strategies are just a few of the accomplishments she has added to her resumé during her extraordinary career with America's sweethearts.
