The Cars: Technology
built 231 days ago
[C]ontributing to this trend is that some cars lose a lot of their resale value because of technology features that become obsolete, and lower-priced cars tend to have fewer of such amenities. For instance, when vehicles with older in-dash navigation systems are replaced by those with slicker, updated units, the older cars drop further in value. But, lower-priced cars usually forgo high-tech gadgets and include mostly basic, essential features. As a result, they tend not to have inflated sticker prices caused by a glut of expensive options and therefore don't have as far to fall in terms of resale values.

Design Challenge is a competition where eight car design studios in southern California are challenged to create the "Robocar 2057" as a combination of vehicle technology and artificial intelligence. The Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center of North America (Irvine, CA) looked 50 years into the future and came up with the shimmering silver and gold Vision SilverFlow car. With its long, flowing lines and narrow, exposed wheels, this vision of the future is highly reminiscent of the golden years in motor racing during the 1930s.

During the race, a UM advance team traveling ahead of Momentum monitored upcoming speed limits and broadcasted the information remotely through the mesh-enabled VMM to set the maximum speed of the solar car. Motorola's wireless car-to-car communication technology controlled the speed of Momentum throughout the 1,880-mile/3,000km race so it could not exceed the speed limit. Motorola technologies provided the UM Solar Race Team with a competitive advantage and enabled them to avoid possible speed penalties while other teams had to run at a more conservative, slower pace.
