It's been 30 years since the Bee Gees released Saturday Night Fever, one of the best selling pop albums of all time and the best-selling soundtrack ever. BBC Hardtalk Extra broadcasted on Friday 12th October 2007 Gavin Esler talking to Bee Gee Robin Gibb. Click to the website to hear the interview: http://news.bbc.co.uk

There has been much talk of The Bee Gees being Australian . . . They are not. They emigrated from Manchester (UK) to Australia with their family in 1958. By 1967 they were on the move again (back to the UK). So the brothers Gibb spent a grand total of 9 years in Australia. That makes them as Australian as Mel Gibson . . .

As an examination of the meteoric rise of the Bee Gees, Greatest shines its light with a laser-like focus. The mid-70's success of the Bee Gees is all the more stunning when you realize that a greatest hits album covering only a four year period could span two discs. Yet you would be hard pressed to find any filler on either disc. Omission of most any song on this album would surely elicit howls of protest from fans already upset that it ignored anything prior to 1974's Mr. Natural.

Ossie Byrne believes the Bee Gees are the most original band in Australia. He tells 18 year-old Barry and the 16 year-old twins to keep recording, keep writing songs. Persistence will bring more results than luck. Ossie knows about luck. When Ossie was 18, he’d been in the RAAF; like Nat Kipner, he’d been stationed in New Guinea. Ossie had been badly injured.

Sir George Martin, The Beatles original producer, and his son Giles Martin have been working with the entire archive of Beatles recordings to create the musical component for LOVE. The result is an unprecedented approach to the music for a stage production. "After spending more than 40 years of my life working with The Beatles and their wonderful music, I am thrilled to be working with it once again, on this exciting project with Cirque du Soleil," said Sir George Martin. "The show will be a unique and magical experience."

Considering what a huge #1-with-a-bullet hit Spirits Having Flown had been, it's amazing that this record's release a couple years later was barely noticed by anyone--even the Bee Gee faithful. It must've sold less than 1% of what Spirits did. A decision had obviously been made to junk the falsettos and get with the modern-rock sound of the time. It wasn't a good decision, and more importantly, it wasn't a good album. And it was to be their last for quite some time!
