Thandie Newton: Nicole Kidman
built 194 days ago
Newton made her film debut in Flirting (1991). This Australian movie was ... a launch pad for a young Nicole Kidman, with whom she has remained friends. She gained international recognition opposite Nick Nolte in the Merchant-Ivory production of Jefferson in Paris as Sally Hemmings, which led to her being cast in Jonathan Demme's Beloved (1998), in which she played the title character and costarred with Danny Glover, Kimberly Elise, and Oprah Winfrey. She played the female lead Nyah Hall in the film Mission: Impossible II. When this film went over schedule, she had to pull out of the film Charlie's Angels, and her character ultimately went to Lucy Liu.
Thandie started on screen in 1991 in “Flirting,” starring Nicole Kidman. She’s Rachael Stevens in the Harvey Keitel actioneer “The Young Americans” in 1993, Hilary Rule in the Jon Bon Jovi vehicle “The Leading Man,” Cookie in the Tim Roth / Tupac movie “Gridlock’d,” opposite Mark Wahlberg in “The Truth About Charlie,” Tiffany in the Stallone direct-to-DVD “Shade,” Dame Vaaco in “The Chronicles of Riddick,” and her most critically praised role, Christine Thayer in “Crash.” She’s on 13 episodes of “E.R.” from 2003 – 2005 as Makemba Likasu.

It was the Australian film Flirting, starring Nicole Kidman and featuring a complete unknown Naomi Watts, that put Newton on the map. Still friends with both women, Newton had no idea at the time she shot that film, at age 18, that she would still continue to embrace an acting career, years later. "I think most actors feel like, God, maybe I won't be doing this next year, even though there may not be a next year."
