The story of the Alamo and Texas Revolution is an intriguing and complex story. The aftermath of independence is equally interesting as a disenfranchised people struggled to reassert their rights as American citizens, rights guaranteed by the Texas and United States constitutions.

After the Texas Revolution, bandits roamed the Mexican border, Native Americans controlled the Western Plains, and desperadoes hid out in the countryside. To stem the lawlessness, the Texas government turned to the Texas Rangers, a unique group of lawmen established by Stephen F Austin in 1826. Men such as "Big Foot " Wallace, John Coffee Hays, and Samuel H. Walker tracked down outlaws, settled feuds, and reconciled land disputes. In 1846, Ranger Walker and Samuel Colt modified the Colt revolver into the Walker Colt, a six shooter specially adapted for the range. Ranger Jim R. Hughes wore a badge for 28 years between 1887 and 1915, but lived on in legend as the fictional hero in the novel The Lone Star Ranger, penned by Zane Grey. ranger Captain Bill McDonald earned a reputation as "the man who would charge hell with a bucket of water."

The first fighting of the Texas Revolution took place on October 2, 1835, at the Battle of Gonzales, north of San Antonio. Mexican soldiers left San Antonio and went to Gonzales to seize a canon and other weapons. American settlers in the area and a few volunteer reinforcements drove the Mexican army away. A week later, the revolutionaries won the Battle of Goliad when they captured the presidio (fort) there. They ... seized military goods including weapons and munitions.

Texas Revolution – A diorama of the final assault on the Alamo, March 6, 1836, is depicted along with replicas of the Twin Sisters cannons used in the Battle of San Jacinto. A diorama of the Battle of San Jacinto, the battle in which Texas won its independence from Mexico on April 21, 1836, and an exhibit of the ten battle flags of Texas are presented as well as information on William B. Travis, Sam Houston, Juan Seguin, General Santa Ana and Stephen F. Austin. On display is a replica of the Mexican cannon captured by the Texans at San Jacinto, along with a “soldado Mexicano” resplendent in 1835 field uniform. Mr. Nieto still remembers wanting to hide under his desk every time the subject of the Texas Revolution came up in school. He was embarrassed by the depiction of Mexico, his homeland, as a tyrannical country peopled with banditos. And even as a child of 10, he knew that version of history was one-sided.
