In Texas, the lottery reported more than $3.77 billion in sales in the 2006 fiscal year, the highest amount in its 14-year history. The lottery contributes $1 billion per year to public schools.

States are ... trying to bolster the number of “core” players, according to interviews with lottery officials in several states. Such players typically represent only 10 percent to 15 percent of all players but account for 80 percent of sales, according to Independent Lottery Research, which does research and marketing for state lotteries.

Part of the proceeds from a lottery sale would set up an endowment for cancer research. But the proposal was clouded by reports this week that his son, Griffin, recently was hired by UBS, a firm interested in being a consultant on any Lottery sale.
