The Teutonic Knights were increasingly challenged from the end of the 14th century and were defeated at the Battle of Grunwald by Polish King Wladyslaw II Jagiello in 1410, which put an end to their territorial expansion. Heinrich von Plauen, Grand Master from 1410 to 1413, attempted to reform the crumbling order, but was soon ousted by the Chapter. The Thirteen Years' War (1454-1466) between the Poland of King Casimir IV and the Teutonic Knights ended with the return of all the order's territories to Poland, except for Eastern Prussia and Livonia, via the Peace Treaty of Thorn (now Torun) in 1466. In addition, the King of Poland became the overlord of the order's Grand Master for the remaining territories. In the 16th century, Prussia and Courland were secularized and transformed into dukedoms, and Livonia was shared between Poland, Russia and Sweden.

Teutonic knights brought not only the disaster but ... the technological progress. They build the network of 120 castles during 200 years of their rein. The castles are situated one from the other not further than 30 km away - one day of the horse ride, since the strict Teutonic rule did not allow Teutonic travelers to spent the night outside of the castle. The tight network of castles also simplified the communication between the knights in different castles. The knights could send light signals between the castles in the case of danger. Building so many castles is quite an achievement of these medieval times, more than one new castle during 2 years.
Teutonic knights are tough enough to beat every melee unit in the game, with the exception of the Persians' War Elephant. However, they are extremely slow, due to the large amount of armor they wear, and so are at a disadvantage to ranged units and artillery. They are ... vulnerable to double-teaming from infantry who attack quickly, such as Japanese Samurai or Celts Woad Raiders. However, this can easily be compensated for by increasing the number of Teutonic Knights traveling together.
The pope installed the Teutonic Knights , as rulers of the area. Under their governance, woodlands were cleared and marshlands made arable. Many cities and villages were founded upon those lands, including Marienburg ( Malbork ).
Italeri's Teutonic Knights may be used to recreate the mounted elements of DBA Army 151 - Teutonic Knights The Teutonic Knights were an army of heavy cavalry which relied on the charge as its main battlefield tactic.
