Tetris Worlds is composed of six different flavors of Tetris: square Tetris, cascade Tetris, sticky Tetris, hot-line Tetris, fusion Tetris, and plain old white-bread Tetris. By tweaking the existing rules of Tetris or adding entirely new rules, each mode requires you to come at block management and block placement with a slightly different strategy--though, for better or for worse, they're all still Tetris. Any of these modes can be played solo or against up to three other players on a single Xbox, and more importantly, you can ... play square Tetris, cascade Tetris, and standard Tetris against three opponents via Xbox Live. Square and cascade Tetris can both be played in knockout mode, where extra incomplete lines are added to the bottom of your opponents' fields when you clear multiple lines. Standard Tetris can also be played in knockout mode, as well as in race mode, where the goal is to simply clear lines and reach the next level of difficulty before your opponents. Finally, the game features a lounge mode, which takes the focus off straight competition and instead serves as a sort of chat room.

Tetris Worlds is the first Tetris branded game to include a story mode... it does not contain much depth and is poorly executed. The story is as follows: Eons ago, a race of people, created the Tetrions, which enabled individuals to travel to different planets that are in different galaxies. This race is now extinct, but there are still people who understand the concept behind this ancient technology. These intelligent people figured out the concept of the seven falling blocks named Tetrimions, as the only way to open these portals. Once the gate is open, this is called Tetris; it becomes the key to connecting and traveling to distant planets. The Minos, which inhabits the planet Hadar 4, are the latest people to unlock the secret to the Tetrions.

Each mode of Tetris Worlds has its own scoring system. As in The New Tetris, the unit of score in each mode is "lines"; 2-, 3-, and 4-line clears grant additional points in some modes.

Tetris Worlds is, for the most part, a collection of almost every kind of Tetris and Tetris-like game that has come before. Of course, the original Tetris is featured, which everyone should be familiar with. You place blocks of different shapes as they fall from the top of the screen, trying to create full lines across the "Matrix", the area where you place your blocks. This mode should be very familiar to anyone who has played Tetris before. Sticky Tetris is a slightly different version where blocks of the same color fuse together. You can clear blocks by either creating solid horizontal lines, or by fusing 25 blocks of the same color together.

Tetris Worlds features 6 variations of Tetris. Newcomers to Tetris will want to either start with the original Tetris or jump to Learning Tetris, which provides a lesson for the novice player. or perhaps a game of Cascade Tetris would tempt you, with blocks that fall due to a line clear are carried over to the next line, creating a cascade effect. then again, you might want to try your hand at Hot-Line Tetris, which has a set of hot lines for you to clear out. Anyway you play, it's a blast. Of course, nothing beats the original Tetris.

Tetris Worlds is focused on a bizarre "story mode" that takes place in a science-fiction world. Each of the main modes of play found in the game is set in a colorful, attractive fully 3D environment. A cute little eyeball character watches your actions as you play. The game's audio effects are fitting, and you can turn them down or off if you like. Tetris Worlds even has a number of default gameplay options--for example, the aforementioned "hold" command, as well as the ability to see a "ghost" block at the bottom of the screen, which is where your block would land if you hard-dropped it. The game's techno-ambient music does get a bit repetitive, but even that is pretty good. So how is it possible that the actual gameplay of Tetris Worlds could have such an egregious flaw in it?
