Terrence Malick: New Line
built 236 days ago
From Mumbai, New Kerala's Nitin Sethi reports on Mr. Malick's new one, Tree of Life. India's Percept Picture Company would executive produce with a January start, and Colin Farrell starring with "2 major Hollywood stars in the leads." Working from Malick's script, it would be shot by Emmanual Lubezki."

In a way comparable only to documentary filmmakers, Malick creates his films in the editing room, where he wades through the miles of film he’s shot. (And, true to his nature, days before the film’s release, he is still trimming and fiddling with The New World, which will be first shown in the longer 149-minute version, and later shown in a slightly briefer cut.) When he finds what he’s looking for—which is a high percentage of the time in this case—he can assemble sequences that operate like music, but music of a specific type, where a stated theme can easily be subsumed in large orchestral colourations and mood passages, like Mahler.
New Line released The New World to theaters late last year, and the company would surely have been happier if Malick had glad-handed journalists the way less reclusive directors do. Such marketing work is especially important when a film might have trouble "finding its audience" without some extra pushes. The New World was such a film theatrically, and while its DVD edition (from New Line's home-video division) will surely do well over the long haul, it's hard to imagine copies of this artfully diffuse drama flying pell-mell off the shelves.

Critics have already seen Terrence Malick’s ‘The New World’ and it’s even being released in theaters for a limited engagement this Sunday. But according to Malick, it isn’t finished! He’s told Variety that he’s going to recut the film, trimming 15-20 minutes off its ponderous running time.
