[DO-IT Home] Terraserver is the home of the World Imagery Database. At the Terraserver site, you can view satellite images and aerial photos of cities throughout the United States. There are ... images for cities located in other parts of the world. You can search for locations by selecting from a list of famous places or by selecting the "find a spot on earth" option. You do not need to know the longitude or latitude of a location, only the name. You can also look up a map of the area to compare to the satellite images and aerial photos.

Microsoft SQL Server 7.0, scheduled to ship later this year, is the underlying technology that makes the TerraServer possible as it provides support for massive, scalable databases and for hosting those databases on the Web. The technology in Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 supports one-terabyte plus databases with faster backup, multi-site update replication, distributed query and very large database (VLDB) enhancements. Microsoft SQL Server is a member of the Microsoft BackOffice family -- a set of servers for building, managing and deploying large-scale business solutions.

It is ... important when working with large TerraServer images that the location specified for the cache is on a disk drive with plenty of free space. Users sometimes will ask for download of TerraServer images without thinking about how large the resultant image may be and thus end up inadvertently requesting immensely large data sets.

Beyond demonstrating the scalability of Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise Edition and Microsoft Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition, TerraServer ... demonstrates the scalability of Compaq's AlphaServer and StorageWorks hardware. The system runs on a Compaq Alpha Server 8400 system with eight 440-MHz Compaq Alpha processors and 324 StorageWorks disks.

Manifold will cache image tiles streamed from an TerraServer server so that panning and zooming in the image can be as fast as possible. For example, when zooming into an TerraServer image Manifold will make use of less detailed image tiles that have already been fetched to quickly render the desired view as best as possible and then progressively update the display as more detailed tiles stream in.
