Terraserver: Images
built 249 days ago
The TerraServer images are available for viewing free of charge. In addition, SPIN-2 and the USGS are making the images available as high-quality prints and digital files for a modest fee. Using Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition, Aerial Images and the USGS accept credit card orders over the Internet. Microsoft says it derives no income from this service. Microsoft is hoping that the TerraServer database is of interest to general consumers as well as more specialized users in real estate, construction, urban and regional planning, education, environmental services, public safety and government.

The resolution and scale of the maps generated by Terraserver depend on how far you have zoomed in to your site of interest. Within the Lower 48 states you can obtain 1:7,500 scale topographic maps and black and white air photos to resolution of 1 m/pixel. You can switch between air photo and topo maps for the same location and download both to JPEG files that can be loaded into word-processing, presentation, or image viewing/processing software. If you plan to use these images in a GIS program you can ... download "world file" coordinates for both images. Online help is available to explain the user interface, but most aspects are self-explanatory.
Manifold can automatically link images served by Microsoft’s TerraServer image server. TerraServer is a free server operated by Microsoft Corporation that serves free aerial images and scanned USGS maps (DRGs) provided via a partnership with the U.S. Geologic Survey. At present, TerraServer provides images and raster maps for the United States, including Puerto Rico. See http://terraservice.net or http://www.terraserver-usa.com for details.

TerraServer.com offers other products in addition to a subscription to the website. All users are able to purchase digital downloads that include a geo-referenced world file, which allows the image to be imported into GIS and CAD software. Downloads are available in the following formats: JPEG, TIF, GIF, BMP, PDF, PSD, and PNG. TerraServer ... allows users to select digital images and have them printed through MyTopo, who has an exclusive print partnership with TerraServer.com. Prints are available in the following paper types and finishes through the TerraServer.com website: Glossy, Matte, Laminated, Waterproof, and Canvas.
The new linked image can now be opened and used like other images except that until they are unlinked to create a local image, TerraServer images are read-only and cannot be re-projected. Until the image is completely fetched, when the image component is clicked open it will appear in an image window as a partially transparent gray rectangle covering the extents of the image. If the image is used as a layer in a map, it will appear in transparent color in those parts not yet fetched from TerraServer.

The TerraServer viewer allows for users to select imagery from different dates and of different resolutions. While most of the TerraServer imagery is focused on high resolution, color, satellite and aerial imagery, TerraServer.com ... offers Color Infrared Imagery, Panchromatic Imagery, Low Resolution Satellite Imagery, and Topographic Maps. Subscribers to TerraServer.com gain access to a drawing and measuring tool that can measure surface distance and area on the images. TerraServer also makes a number of image overlays available, including road names, FEMA flood data, earthquake data, landslide data, real estate parcels, parks, schools, hospitals, airports, and zip codes.
