Tennis: Davis Cup

Tennis is a sport that focuses on the individual rather than the team in most aspects. There are some events where team play is important, such as in doubles matches or the Davis Cup, but typically fans tend to follow their favorite players. With personalities ranging from the fiery and controversial, like John McEnroe, to the likeable and marketable like Andre Agassi, Anna Kournikova and Andy Roddick, there are plenty of reasons to be a tennis fan.

Last year, as many as 75 Men's and Women's Pro division teams from 12 countries competed for the $15,000 in cash prizes at the National Championship event.

Other major tennis championships include the Davis Cup and the Fed Cup. The Davis Cup, started in 1900, is an annual international men’s competition held between national teams. The Fed Cup, started in 1963, is the women’s equivalent to the Davis Cup. Countries play each other throughout the year in contests known as ties, and the winning country advances to the next round. Davis Cup and Fed Cup competitions involve four singles matches and one doubles match. The team that wins at least three out of the five matches is the winner.

"The Davis Cup is unlike any other tennis event. In fact it bears almost no resemblance to tennis, with fans cheering and beating their drums during points and the road players often having to deal with verbal abuse and projectiles from the crowd" said Alex Czajkowski, Sportsbook.com. "It's easily the most heated, entertaining tennis event of the year and everybody bets on the outcome."
