Tengwar: Modes

Tengwar is written is a number of different ways known as "modes". For example there is a Quenya mode, a Sindarin mode and even an English mode. The phonetic values of the consonants (tengwa) and the ways vowels are indicated varies from mode to mode.

The tools that are introduced in the next section offer various solutions for creating Tengwar inscriptions and documents. All of them solve the tengwa-tehta alignment problem by automatically selecting the appropriate tehta variant. Some go further by implementing mode-specific transcription rules, so that the user can mostly write according to the normal Latin spelling of the language in question. The choice of input method probably depends on the exact needs of the user, such as the length of the text and availability of support for the mode to be used.

Entsprechend der damals vorherrschenden Sprachtheorie unter den Noldor-Elben wurden in der Feanorischen Schreibweise (Quenya-Modus) nur Konsonanten durch “richtige” Tengwar dargestellt. Vokale, die man als “Färbung” der Konsonanten auffasste, wurden durch Zusatzzeichen, so genannte Tehtar, wiedergegeben. Feanor soll auch eine Schreibweise entworfen haben, die alle Laute durch Tengwar darstellte, aber diese, heißt es, habe sich nicht durchsetzen können.
