Tenchi Muyo

Tenchi Muyo, created by Pioneer in the mid 90's, is one of the most beloved series in anime history. The wacky stories, hilarious characters and situations, and slightly off-kilter sense of humor endeared fans to the series from the first episode of the OAV series that started the whole mess. The OAV series (or rather the two series) lasted 13 installments, and was more or less continued in a comic series. Then there was a 26 episode TV series that starts the whole story over from the beginning and takes it through to completion, and three movies after that (the first theoretically follows, or at least fits into, the TV series, as does the third, but the second is anybody's guess). Then there is a whole new TV series, known stateside as Tenchi in Tokyo, that sort of takes up in the middle of the story, but has a completely different continuity. Most recently, there is Tenchi Muyo: GXP, which does follow the OAV continuity, but has a completely different set of main characters.

Tenchi Muyo is made up of many multiverses. Rather than following a single storyline, or even two, each unit is practically independent of the others. This can seem confusing initially, but it's the interaction between the characters that remains consistent and ultimately, really what makes every part of the Tenchi universe worth watching. The Tenchi OVA series is by most standards the best of the Tenchi multiverses. The animation is high quality and the story compact. The costuming and technology design of the series is stylistically superior to the rest of the multiverses, and is among the best of anime in general.

Tenchi Muyo originated as a six-episode OAV 1 series, created by Kajishima Masaki. The series proved so successful that a second OAV series was made, plus special episodes focusing on specific characters. The OAVs gave rise to the 26 episode television series collectively dubbed The Tenchi Universe, which follows a plot line quite different from the OAV series, although many of the characters are the same.

The second is Tenchi Muyo! GXP, which was released in Japan in 2001. The series takes place during the Kajishima version of the OVA continuity, and is set a year after the events of the third OVA series despite being released first chronologically. The main character of this twenty-six episode TV series is Seina Yamada, a friend of Tenchi Masaki who accidentally joined the Galaxy Police. Many characters from Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki make appearances in this series, including the use of Seiryo as a major character and a full-fledged Tenchi Muyo!

After it became clear that the original Tenchi Muyo was a humongous hit, AIC, the producers of the show, wisely decided to spread the show to a larger audience by creating a television version. All the main characters from the original version were included - though most were slightly changed in the transition, and came to Earth in a different order and for different reasons - and one new main character was added. Tenchi's love interests this time were reduced to two: Ryoko, and her rival, the alien princess Ayeka. The basic premise of the show was ... the same, but the storyline ended up taking a radically different path.

The first animated appearance of Magical Girl Pretty Sammy was in the Tenchi Muyo/Ryo-ohki Sound File Japanese release. The Sound File was a collection of Tenchi Muyo! music videos, mostly using footage from other Tenchi Muyo! animated releases, but containing some original animation. One of these was an original sequence involving Magical Girl Pretty Sammy battling evil space villain Kiyone and her henchmen.
