Temple Mount: Israeli Authorities
built 615 days ago
Discussion about the status of Temple Mount was taboo in Israel until recently. Opening the subject for debate has provoked powerful opposition from the Israeli nationalist-religious camp, which claims broad support from Jews around the world and has threatened violence if the sacred site comes under Palestinian sovereignty.
Authorities who permit ascending the Temple Mount generally advise observing the elements of the laws of ritual purity that are possible in the absence of the ancient Temple rites. These include cleansing following seminal emissions and menstrual discharges. Although laws relating to ritual impurity through male seminal emissions, which were a significant aspect of the laws of ritual purity in Talmudic times, have gradually disappeared from Orthodox Judaism since the Middle Ages, they still apply in full force to contemporary Orthodox Jewish law concerning ascending the Temple Mount. Following a seminal emission, even one resulting from marital intercourse, Orthodox men immerse in a mikvah (ritual bath) for ritual cleansing prior to ascending the Mount. Women likewise do not ascend during the period of niddah (during and immediately after menstruation) and, following receiving a seminal emission (intercourse), and immerse in a mikvah to attain ritual purity prior to ascending. Because the rules involved are complex and may be unfamiliar since many are not applicable to circumstances other than the Temple Mount, some authorities advise always immersing in a mikvah as a precaution prior to ascending.[27]
While doing renovation at the famed Temple Mount, Israeli archaeologists discovered a sealed layer containing fragments of ceramic table vessels and animal bones. The items have been dated by Israeli scientists to the First Temple in the eighth century B.C. - roughly during the reign of the biblical King Hezekiah. The discovery includes fragments of bowl rims and bases, the base of a small jug used for ladling oil, the handle of a small jug and the rim of a storage jar. All are typical of Israelite vessels from that period, scientists say.

The police have decided not to seal the new entrance to the Temple Mount opened by the Moslem Waqf a few days ago, and the decision has been approved by Prime Minister Ehud Barak. The police claim that the entrance is needed as an additional exit for large crowds in case of emergency. The Jerusalem Municipality and the Antiquities Authority have protested the decision. MK Benny Elon (National Union), who called yesterday for the entrance to be closed, terms the decision not to do so a "surrender to the Islamic Movement."

What occurs at the Temple Mount is not merely an Israeli affair or a Jewish issue, noted Steven Ortiz, director of the Center for Archaeological Research. Christians have a connection to the situation as well.

It is insanity to even consider the destruction of the Temple Mount. You can't change history. The ancient temple of the Israelites has been gone for millenia, replaced by succeeding cultures and structures, just as it occurs in every civilization that has ever existed. The very suggestion reeks of prejudice and racism. Would a Jew gladly allow the destruction of synagogues across the world because they were not the original inhabitants of that property? want to cause more conflict in the world?
