Since the 7th century AD, the Temple Mount in Jerusalem has been the site of two major Muslim religious shrines, the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Remarkably, the Temple Mount... known as Mount Moriah, is the holiest site in Judaism, the third holiest site in Islam, and a primary site of historical significance for Christianity. Thus, it has been, and continues to be, one of the most volatile sites on the globe.

Some time after the destruction of the Second Temple, Muslims gained control over the region, and the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque were built on the Temple Mount. While those structures were damaged or destroyed over time, newer versions exist there today. Still, both Israel and the Palestinian Authority lay claim over the area known as the Temple Mount. The Muslim Council currently controls the site.

The temple mount is the place where the Jewish temple was built, starting from King Solomon almost 3,000 years ago. The temple was destroyed by the Romans and never rebuilt again by the Jews. It was replaced by the Muslim shrines in the 8th C AD which stand there today, with the Golden Dome of the Rock - the city's symbol.

A bulldozer was seen last week ripping up earth on the Temple Mount, at the Dome of the Rock platform. It slashed a long gash, purportedly to lay new electric cables. With crude, damaging handling, it exposed a largely gray deposit, which according to archeologists is a sure-fire indication of "archeologically significant" matter.

According to Islam, the Prophet Mohammad ascended into Heaven riding al-Burak from the edge of the Temple Mount (Haram al-Shaif in Arabic). Al-Aqsa Mosque is located on the site of the Prophet’s ascent and is the third holiest site in Islam. The Dome of the Rock was built over the Holiest Rock, considered in Muslim traditions as the Center or Core of the Universe.

One of the most fascinating questions about the Temple Mount after the Islamic occupation in 638 A.D. is connected with the Dome of the Rock.
