In the battle for public opinion, union leaders are eager to draw a connection between the customer complaints disaster and staffing cutbacks at Telus. After the merger last year, Telus eliminated 6,500 jobs and reduced the number of call centres from 66 in 19 communities to 20 in five communities and combined eight different trouble-ticket systems into one new system.

In late 2001, TELUS Geomatics began the development of an Emergency Management System (EMS) designed for customers in the oil and gas and municipal sectors. The goal was to link the internal GeoExplorer application with an external Interactive Voice Response system to connect remote data on each system. The EMS allows customers to pinpoint an affected area, initiate a response from the GIS system to the IVR system, which then notifies all the people in the particular emergency area via the telephone in real time.

Handmark ... created an integrated billing system that makes it easy for Telus customers to purchase content for their smartphone. Any purchase a customer makes within the Pocket Express store on their device or through the web store will show up on their monthly Telus bill. Paul Reddick, CEO of Handmark, said: "Treo, BlackBerry, and other smartphone customers on the Telus network now have instant, and most importantly, easy to use access to essential information on the go through Pocket Express."

TELUS has recently signed sponsorship agreements with two National Hockey League (NHL) and two major junior hockey teams. In addition to TELUS being the four teams' exclusive telecommunications sponsor, TELUS will support several charitable causes driven by the teams and will work with the teams to use telecommunications technology - such as ring tones, web pages and games streaming to TELUS high speed Internet customers - to bring the game to fans in innovative ways.
