While standard televisions offer some significant advantages over other technologies, changes in consumer preferences have put sales into a tailspin. Consumer Reports is one of the few professional review publications still testing direct-view sets. Consumer Guide ... looks at CRT TVs, but the reports are more superficial and little (if any) formal testing appears to have been conducted. CNet.com has stopped reviewing standard TVs, but at least one tested TV remains available, and you can find user comments about other TVs on the site. User reviews are also available at Amazon.com, Epinions, CircuitCity.com and Sears.com. Another good resource is AVSForum.com, a good site for user-to-user information.

Although the manufacturer tries to eliminate all defects from their televisions, nothing can be 100%. Some products have complicated and brand-new technology that could fail. For example, LCD displays have several ” transistors” that can fail, which leads to pixels failing. This failure rate is usually small “0.00008% for a 1024×768 television, for example” but still present.

Thirty percent of all televisions manufactured by Japanese companies are made in factories in Mexico. The factories themselves will soon be producing hybrids in which the television, computer monitor, and telephone are a single unit, although this development will take further improvements in compatibility between machines that speak analog versus digital language and the creation of PC-to-video bridges. Proof of the possibility of this integrated future exists now in Internet access that is now available through television cable converters and the living room TV screen.
