Yorkshire Television studios Although Yorkshire Television claims to serve the whole of Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, it has long been contended by many of the people of Sheffield that Yorkshire Television shows an unacceptable bias towards West Yorkshire in general and Leeds in particular[1]. This alleged bias was seldom better illustrated than when Sheffield Wednesday won an unlikely League Cup Final in 1991 against Manchester United. Extended highlights of the game and post-match celebrations were available and individual ITV stations were left to decide whether to show them; London Weekend Television showed the additional half-hour, but Yorkshire Television opted to stay with their scheduled programme, War of the Monster Trucks - a decision which they have never subsequently been able to live down[1]. Yorkshire Television opened a Calendar News studio in Sheffield prior to the War of the Monster Trucks incident[2], possibly to counter accusations of bias. The studio is clearly a very small setup ... which again has led to a perception among locals that YTV treats Sheffield as an afterthought.
Reality television as it is currently understood, though, can be traced directly to several television shows that began in the late 1980s and 1990s. COPS, which first aired in the spring of 1989, showed police officers on duty apprehending criminals; it introduced the camcorder look and cinéma vérité feel of much of later reality television. Nummer 28, which aired on Dutch television in 1991, originated the concept of putting strangers together in the same environment for an extended period of time and recording the drama that ensued. It ... pioneered many of the stylistic conventions that have since become standard in reality television shows, including a heavy use of soundtrack music and the interspersing of events on screen with after-the-fact "confessionals" recorded by cast members, that serve as narration. One year later, the same concept was used by MTV in their new series The Real World; Nummer 28 creator Erik Latour has long claimed that The Real World was directly inspired by his show. Changing Rooms, a British TV show that began in 1996, showed couples redecorating each others' houses, and was the first reality show with a self-improvement or makeover theme.

After Granada removed the Channel 3 branding, Yorkshire reverted back to its original theme. As a broadcaster, Yorkshire Television was the first member of the ITV Network to acquire the long-running Australian soap opera Prisoner, premiering the show on Monday 8th October 1984 at 23:00. By summer 1985 the series was "going like a rocket" on Yorkshire prompting other regions to acquire the show. Yorkshire Television was vocal in its disapproval of Thames Television's surprise poaching of Dallas from the BBC, and was successful in insisting Thames adhere to the rules of fair play.
Teens' TV remotes seemed pre-programmed for a do-it-yourself television show boom. An overwhelming majority of teens (65 percent) said they sometimes watch TV home improvement-related television shows, such as Trading Spaces, This Old House, VH1's Rock the House and MTV's Cribs. According to the survey, 74 percent of girls occasionally tune into these shows, as do 55 percent of boys.
In addition, a number of scripted television shows have taken the form of documentary-type reality TV shows, in "mockumentary" style. The first such show was the BBC series Operation Good Guys, which premiered in 1997. Other examples include People Like Us, Trailer Park Boys, The Office, Drawn Together and Reno 911!.
