Telemarketing is a practice where a business initiates a phone call in order to propose a commercial transaction. Millions of telemarketing calls are made to individuals every year. Telemarketing is highly unpopular among Americans; public opinion on telemarketing routinely shows that the vast majority of Americans object to unsolicited sales calls.

Telemarketing can have an immense impact on any business. It is that area of marketing which provides access to the widest market without having to spend a fortune. Manpower and telephones are all you need to get started. Almost all the companies which have something to sell are using or are planning to use telemarketing services to boost their sales figures. Telemarketing services can be started as an internal process of the company or they can be outsourced to the numerous telemarketing companies that are available.

Telemarketing is a huge business, projected to exceed $750 billion in 2003, so it's not likely to be legislated away completely. While the Federal Trade Commission is creating a Federal "Do Not Call" List, this list is hugely expensive, costing $16,000,000 in startup costs and millions per year to maintain. Additionally, some groups are, and will continue to be, exempt from these rules, including political campaign telemarketers and tax-exempt organizations (see "Who is exempt from Do Not Call List regulation?").

Telemarketing has been around for a long time, but in the recent years it has been creating a large buzz around itself. India especially has suddenly become a hub for these jobs. Apart from the local products, the large amount of outsourcing that has been happening for international products is amazing. Telemarketers can work in a variety of settings. Mostly their jobs involve calling up people and either spreading awareness of the product or to try and clinch a deal over the phone.
