* Teens whose parents establish clear consequences for breaking family driving rules are less likely to drive more than 5 mph over the speed limit (44 percent) than teens whose parents do not set consequences (56 percent). * Teens whose parents establish clear consequences for breaking family driving rules are less likely to drive with three or more passengers in a car (36 percent vs. 42 percent) or eat/drink while driving (31 percent vs. 40 percent) than their counterparts who do not have any clear consequences set. * Interestingly, simply establishing consequences about talking on the cell phone while driving does not significantly influence behavior. However, teens who say their parents are likely to enforce any established consequences for breaking their family driving rule about cell phones are significantly less likely to talk on the cell phone while driving (37 percent) than teens who say their parents are unlikely to actually follow-through on any consequence (65 percent). Parental Power: Study Shows Parents Holding Back on Guidance
Teens are most likely to say they talk often to their friends about sex and sexual relationships (62%). Four in 10 (41%) ... say they talk with their parents often. Teens are much less likely to speak with school and religious leaders. Older teens (15 and 16 year olds) talk about sex with their parents more than younger teens, as do girls more than boys.  Teens who are having intercourse are somewhat more likely to speak with their parents about sex. However teens who are engaging in oral sex are more likely to speak with their friends about sex.

Teens — particularly girls — with strong religious views are less likely to have sex than are less religious teens, largely because their religious views lead them to view the consequences of having sex negatively. According to a recent analysis of the NICHD-funded Add Health Survey, religion reduces the likelihood of adolescents engaging in early sex by shaping their attitudes and beliefs about sexual activity.

The research behind the Road Ready Teens guidelines has been shown to reduce crash risk by nearly one-third. Many of the recommendations that underpin Road Ready Teens have been applied to graduated driver licensing (GDL) laws enacted in most states. However, no state law includes the entire slate of guidelines, which includes a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and drug use, mandatory seat belt use for teens and their passengers, and requires teens to obey all of the rules of the road, including never speeding. States with the strongest GDL laws have seen reductions of teen crashes of up to 25 to 35 percent.

Teens are wired different than any another consumer group. They navigate through media clutter with a heightened "BS" meter to sniff out hidden advertising agendas. In a post-scarcity media world, there is no shortage of brands or media pipeline channels. Attention is the new scarcity. Loyalty, trust and affinity become the new pipeline. When there is so much choice, what is the new role of earned attention?
AFA Teens was founded in 2002 by Neha Chauhan, then a high school student, who wanted to educate and engage teenagers in the cause. Its mission is to provide education, counseling and support to young family members, enable teens to share feelings and experiences with their peers and experts, and refer families to various support services available at AFA and its member organizations.
