Family problems can ... give rise to teenage depression. Young people may harbor feelings of guilt and start questioning themselves, wondering if they somehow contributed to the problems, especially if they're also the constant targets for criticism. They will start thinking that their presence at home is unnecessary and that everyone's life will be better if they disappeared.

Teenage depression is widespread and can become a life-long illness, but is more often transitory, said UCLA Psychology Professor Constance Hammen. Adolescent depression can be as high as 20 percent or higher, said Hammen, who has studied depression for more than 30 years. Most of the depressions will be short-lived, but of those who have adolescent depression, perhaps 40 percent will have recurring depression, and many of those will likely be life-long. Unfortunately, most teenagers who struggle with depression never receive treatment for it, and when it is not treated, it can get worse. This can prevent someone from getting the most out of their life, you are only a teenager once.
