Teen: Parents
built 215 days ago
Teen behavior that parents tolerate, disregard or consider acceptable differs from one family to another. Some of the differences come from the parents' own upbringing; they may have had very strict parents themselves, and the expectations of their children follow accordingly. Some behavior is considered a problem when parents feel that others are judging them for their adolescents's behavior; this leads to inconsistent responses from the parents, who may tolerate behavior at home that they would not tolerate in public.

Teen help program services range by type of program. Some are residential programs where a pregnant teen can go to learn some parenting skills, finish school, or learn vocational skills to prepare for the workplace.

Studies show that parents are the most influential factor in a teen's life regarding responsible sexual behavior. According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, 87 percent of teens say that it would be easier for them to postpone sex and avoid pregnancy if they had open, honest conversations with their parents.

Your own responses as a parent are guided by whether you see the teen's behavior as a problem. Frequently, parents over-interpret or over-react to a minor, normal short-term change in the teen behavior. At the other extreme, parents may ignore or downplay a serious problem. They ... may seek quick, simple answers to what are, in fact, complex teen problems. All of these responses to adolescent behavior may create more difficulty or prolong a resolution.

Among AAA's recommendations is parental enforcement to not allow other young people to ride with a first-year, teen driver. This is especially difficult to control when other parents allow it and if that teen driver has younger siblings. But this study, along with decades of other traffic safety research shows conclusively that teen drivers are easily distracted and don't have the experience to safely transport any passengers during their first year of driving.

If a concerned citizen notices something erratic with a teen's driving, they simply call the toll-free number on the decal (which has protection against prank callers) and leave a message relaying the driving behavior they witnessed. The message is immediately routed to the parents, where they can receive a phone call, voice mail, e-mail, or go onto the TEEN ARRIVE ALIVE website to receive the report. Parents establish how they want to be notified if a report is received on their teen driver's decal.
