LYCOS RETRIEVER
Ted Ray
built 202 days ago
Heading a long line of actors well known to radio and television audiences, Ted Ray finds himself in the company of two artists who have contributed to the success of his long-lived" Ray's A Laugh" radio series-Kenneth Connor and Rosalind Knight. In the numerous radio shows in which they've appeared since 1951, Connor has frequently got Ray into" hot water." But in Cany On Teacher, Ray gets his own back by producing as much trouble as Connor can cope with. Connor has appeared in all three in the Carry On series, as have Joan Sims, Hattie Jacques and Charles Hawtrey. To portray the attractive P. T. mistress in this latest romp, Joan Sims had her hair cut short and rinsed blonde, which contrasts effectively with her auburnhaired nurse in Carry On Nurse. Some women say, "change your hair colour and change your luck," but Miss Sims says, " change your hair colour and change your character."

Ted Ray's only Open success came at Muirfield in 1912 where his mighty hitting gained a distinct advantage over a course which had been extensively lengthened since the victory of James Braid six years earlier. Ray was heavily built and played all his golf in tight fitting jacket, collar and tie, with a trilby hat crammed on his head and a large pipe permanently clamped in his teeth throughout the round. His demeanour was as uncompromising as his attack on the golf ball. When asked by a fellow golfer how to achieve greater distance, he replied simply: 'Hit it a bloody sight harder.'

The Course was established in 1920 when the famous professional golfer & golf course architect Ted Ray was employed. He ensured excellent use of the natural features & contours. Improvements were suggested & implemented by HS Colt in 1925 with the current layout, excepting eventual boundary changes by the local authority, retaining much of its originality.

A much sought after music hall comedian, Ray usually played the violin (badly) as part of his act. He ... played comedic roles in several British films - notably as the headmaster in Carry On Teacher. He is, however, best remembered for Ray's a Laugh, which was a domestic comedy in which he was accompanied by Australian Kitty Bluett, who played his wife.

This show was the idea of David Hatch, with production by Simon Brett, but this wasn't the first time that Williams and Ray had paired up. In 1959 they had both appeared in Carry On Teacher, Ray as the Headmaster of the School and Williams as the English Teacher. Nearly a decade later in 1968, they appeared together on LWTs interview show, Frost on Sunday - a rather peculiar edition as there was a technicians strike, so the show was recorded by the management. Whilst there was a certain chemistry both times, the working relationship was not the same in The Betty Witherspoon Show.

Ray's a Laugh was, in the main, a domestic comedy. Ray's wife was played by Australian, Kitty Bluett. Fred Yule played his brother-in-law. Patricia Hayes ... appeared as did Kenneth Connor as Sidney Mincing. In later series Ted had left the Cannon Enquiry Agency and joined The Daily Bugle as a reporter. Jack Watson and Charles Leno joined the cast and new characters included Mrs Dipper and Roger Curfew the paying guest with songs by John Hanson and the King's Men.
