A few years earlier, when Ted Demme was the director of Yo! MTV Raps and Mark Pellington was one of the show's producers, they became friends. Mark Pellington, of course, would go on from his MTV award winning days, to become the director of Arlington Road (1999) and The Mothman Prophecies (2002).
Ted Demme was aggressively carving a name out for himself and stepping out of his uncle’s formidable shadow. In 1999 Demme directed the ill-fated Martin Lawrence vehicle “Life.” Most recently, Demme took a stab at drama in last year’s “Blow,” which starred Johnny Depp. The biographical drama told the story of George Jung, the man considered by many to be responsible for the introduction of cocaine to the United States. The film itself received mixed reviews but it generated plenty of buzz because of Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reuben’s turn as a homosexual hairdresser-turned-pusher. This clearly points to Demme’s talent for eliciting quality performances from his actors. Ted Demme never had the chance to begin working on the film that could have truly made him a household name.
A versatile filmmaker who is known for tackling different genres, Ted Demme started his career back in the late 80’s producing for MTV’s "Yo! MTV Raps." He made his feature debut with the hip-hop comedy "Who’s the Man?," followed by "The Ref," starring Kevin Spacey and Denis Leary. In 1996, Demme made his first box-office hit with the ensemble comedy, "Beautiful Girls," starring Matt Dillon, Uma Thurman, Natalie Portman, and Timothy Hutton. His other notable directing credits include the Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence comedy "Life" and the action-drama "Blow," about drug lord George Jung, starring Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz.

October is Demme month. While it frequently occurs that actors in a family have movies released at the same time, it's much rarer for such an event to happen with directors. This month... as Jonathan Demme's Beloved is hogging the headlines, Monument Ave., the product of Ted Demme (Jonathan's nephew), is also opening. And, although the two films are radically different in tone, style, and intent, both share a common trait: they're worth seeing.

Ms. Demme has never been shy... about her persona. The mainstay of her career has been the music world, as a music supervisor on television shows and films like "Garden State," "Mean Girls" and "Blow," the latter directed by her husband. She had a music label with American Recordings, Rick Rubin's company and according to her biography "incubated" groups like Cypress Hill and House of Pain. She and Mr. Demme lived until the mid-1990's in New York, where she began promoting for clubs and private parties, particularly in the world of hip-hop. When the pair moved to Los Angeles she focused on music supervising and creating a successful party night once a week at the Argyle on Sunset Boulevard.
