The retail risk department of TD Canada Trust is tasked with developing more than 50 types of reports for bank executives and credit centres across the country. The process, which required the team to consolidate data from several disparate sources, was time consuming and often required the team to manually input data into Excel spreadsheets for analysis. By the time the reports were completed, the data was dated and affected the team’s ability to consistently make timely business decisions. To find ways to streamline the process, the bank began looking for a technology solution that would enable it to automate data collection and speed report generation. With the goal of moving to a 64-bit computing environment, the team decided to launch Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2005 for its enhanced Analysis Services technology and support for 64-bit computing. The final solution handles 30 gigabytes of data each month and has allowed the retail risk management team to speed the report generation process and improve the bank’s ability to gain insight from risk data.

On the 11th day of February 2008 at 12:09 p.m., the Salmon Arm RCMP responded to a report of a robbery which had just occurred at the TD Canada Trust located in the 300 block of Alexander Street N.E., Salmon Arm. An unknown male suspect entered the bank, walked up to a teller and produced a note indicating he had a gun and that he wanted cash. No weapon was produced during the incident. The bank teller provided the suspect with an undisclosed amount of Canadian currency and then fled the scene. No one was injured during the incident.

TD Canada Trust knows as well as anyone the value of technology investment. Last year, the bank’s economic group released a report citing IT investments as a contributing factor to the lag in productivity between Ontario and US companies. Entitled Ontario: The Land of Opportunity, the report recommended, among other things, that Ontario companies increase technology spending or risk losing ground to competitors south of the border.

Users receive a spoofed email messageabout a security breach that requires users to report onrecent account activity. Users are askedto click a link contained in the e-mail. The link leads to a phishing site that displays an online banking logon prompt. Once account information is entered, the user is redirected to the real TD Canada Trust web site.
