Thanks to Georgia's pre-Soviet religious tolerance, Tbilisi is home to an eclectic mix of orthodox churches, mosques and synagogues. You will have a superb view of all these, and more besides, from the battlements of Narikala Fortress, which sits above the Old town.
The Tbilisi valley enjoys a temperate and healthy climate. The air is always sweet thanks to the variable breezes, which come down from the mountains and valleys, purifying away the atmosphere. There are up to 25 extremely hot days during the summer, when the temperature exceeds 30o C. Autumn in Tbilisi is a rare pleasure. After the first snow appears on the mountains, usually in the middle of October, the mild, warm, sunny weather begins. Damp misty days mostly occur in December and January. Snow is a rare visitor to the town and comes in small quantities, which melt quickly.

The entire history of Tbilisi is a tale of heroic deeds and a courageous united struggle for freedom and independence. We can look for the secrets of Tbilisi `s charm in its churches – 800, 1 200, 1 400 years old; its museums, where the Old Stone Age, the days of the Argonauts spring to life again; its unique collection of paintings by the legendary Niko Pirosmanishvili; its splendid intellectual tradition; or in the intense atmosphere of creativity.
Mikhail Lermontov, Tiflis, 1837 From 570-580 A.D., the Persians took over Tbilisi and ruled it for about a decade. In the year 627 A.D., Tbilisi was sacked by the Byzantine/Khazar armies and later from 736-738, Arab armies entered the town under Marwan II Ibn-Muhammad. After this point, the Arabs established an emirate in Tbilisi. It must be noted that the Arab domination brought a certain order to the region and introduced a more formal/modernized judicial system into Georgia. In 764, Tbilisi was once again sacked by the Khazars, which was still under Arab control. In the year 853 A.D., the armies of Arab leader Bugha Al-Turki (Bugha the Turk) invaded Tbilisi in order to establish a Caliphate.
